Our face helps us to communicate our emotions and create the first impression we make on others. If we feel poorly about our facial appearance, self-conscious about wrinkles, fine lines and a loss of facial volume, our quality of life suffers. We may be less productive and less socially fulfilled, all because we are embarrassed about how we look. Luckily, there is an excellent solution that is considered the gold standard when it comes to facial rejuvenation, called the Toronto facelift.

What is a rhytidectomy/facelift?

A facelift is a surgical procedure that involves making small incisions in front of and behind the ears in order to tighten the muscles of the face. This procedure results in a smoother, tighter skin around the neck, jawline and cheeks. At the Canadian Plastic Surgery Centre, patients who have facelifts performed appear more youthful and have results that look more natural without the appearance of an overdone facelift.

You may be a good candidate for facelift surgery if you:

  • Are in good physical and emotional health
  • Are a non-smoker
  • Don't have any major medical issues that may interfere with facelift surgery
  • Are prepared to go through the recovery process
  • Have realistic expectations of what facelift can do for you

What are the benefits of a facelift?

The two most common visible signs of facial aging are drooping of the face and loss of facial volume. Patients who wish to combat these changes may do so by having a Toronto facelift to reposition, lift, and tighten their facial skin. Recent research has shown that following a facelift, patients may be perceived as looking up to ten years younger.

  • Corrects facial sagging and drooping
  • Improvement in facial creases and folds
  • Rejuvenate the neck
  • Contour the jawline
  • Restore facial symmetry after muscle and fat loss
  • Can help to tone sagging jowls
  • Improves one's self confidence
  • Creates a better first impression

Fight the Signs of Aging

As we age, our skin becomes less elastic and the muscles begin to weaken, all while gravity continues to pull at our skin. The effects of aging begin to be seen around age 35-40 as the face and neck begins to sag, wrinkles form around the mouth and eyelids droop. This is an inevitable process as the effeects of sun exposure adds up and loss of fat in the face occurs over time

Using the newest and most effective techniques in facial cosmetic surgery, our plastic surgeons are able to address many signs of facial aging, from eliminating jowls on the neck and cheek areas, to erasing wrinkles and fine lines. The soft tissue of the face is carefully lifted while facial muscles are repositioned in order to contour and restore your face to a younger yet natural look. Our main goal is to have you look refreshed and youthful with the best results possible. A facelift may be combined with other cosmetic procedures of the face such as a browlift, eyelid lift, and fat transfer to the face to address several effects of aging.

Our board-certified plastic surgeons have one main goal when performing your Toronto facelift - it is to create a natural, youthful, and rested appearance. Because every individual has a unique facial structure and varying degrees of sagging skin and tissue, each facelift procedure performed by our plastic surgeons is individualized for each patient. Types of facelift

Mini Facelift

Mini facelift is an option for patient's with mild to moderate sagging the cheek and jowl area. Incisions are made along the hairline, at the fold in front of the ear and behind the ear. Excess skin is removed to reduce sagging and also reduces the crease at the nasolabial fold. This procedure results in small scars and reduced recovery times compare to a full facelift. Note: A mini facelift does not address any wrinkling in the forehead area or crows-feet at the lateral aspects of the eyes.

Mid Facelift

Mid facelift is an option for individuals with moderate sagging and targets deeper tissues of the face. Incisions are made along the hairline, at the fold in front of the ear and behind the ear. The skin and fat beneath the skin is lifted off the deep structure of the face and anchored tightly while tissue pulled towards the incisions lines. The excess tissue is removed resulting in a tighter and improved appearance at the nasolabial folds and jowls. Note: A mid facelift does not address any wrinkling in the forehead area or crows-feet at the lateral aspects of the eyes.

Full Facelift

Full facelift is an option for individuals with moderate to several skin sagging, excess skin in the lower face and addresses concerns with wrinkling in the forehead as well as crows-feet in the lateral aspects of the eyes. Incision for a full facelift is made along the hairline, along the side of the ears, and behind the lower part of the head just below the chin. Incisions are typically hidden in the natural creases and contours of the face. A full facelift can be formed by itself but can other techniques such as liposuction and neck lifts or eye surgery. During this procedure, skin, fat and tissues are lift off the deep structures of the face, pulled back and anchored tightly to create a more youthful appearance.

How long will my recovery take?

Recovery time varies according to the type of facelift performed. Typically, after two weeks, most patients are able to engage in the majority of their daily activities, given that they are not overly strenuous, and by three weeks, most of the swelling is usually gone. As the remaining swelling fades, patients are able to resume more strenuous activities. Any scarring, most of which is usually hidden, should fully disappear in about six months time.
