Eczema, or atopic dermatitis, is a chronic skin condition that typically appears on the arms and behind the knees, but they may appear on other parts of your body. Most patients experience occasional flare-ups of their eczema, and these episodes can be caused by environmental irritants, stress and other factors.
What causes eczema?
While the exact cause of eczema is unknown, we do know that there is a connection between having dry skin and certain immune deficiencies.
How do you know if you have eczema?
Eczema most commonly occurs on:
- Behind the knees
- Upper torso
You may notice small, red bumps on your skin that ooze and crust. You may also have patches of skin that are red or brownish-grey. Other signs of eczema are severe itching, especially at night; skin that is thick, cracked or scaly; and skin that is raw and sensitive.
Your eyes can also be affected by eczema. Your eyelids may itch, and scratching can worsen the symptoms by causing swelling and redness.
